Second Specialized Meeting: Opportunities and Challenges of Large-Diameter TBMs in Iran
The second specialized meeting on the topic of “Opportunities and Challenges of Large-Diameter TBMs in Iran” was held by the Iranian Tunnelling Association (IRTA) and Tehran and Suburb Urban Railway Company (Tehran Metro) on Wednesday 25th of December 2024. This event, which was widely welcomed by the tunnel industry students, engineers and experts, provided a suitable platform for exchanging knowledge and examining operational solutions in this industry.

The one day workshop presenters included prominent national and international speakers, including:
Dr. Jamal Rostami, Vice President of the International Tunneling Association (ITA), Mr. Sinan Acun from Turkey and video presentations by Mr. Li Deming and Mr. Hu Tianran from China, Mr. Germai (representative of CREG in Iran), Dr. Farrokh and Mr. Saheb machine manufacturer from Iran, Dr. Morteza Ghamgosar President of Queensland Branch of Australian Tunneling Association, among others.
National and international speakers presented experiences and the latest technologies and achievements in this field. This meeting examined key issues and challenges related to the use of large-diameter TBMs in Iranian construction projects. Presentation topics and key points raised included the following:
• Global advances in the use of large-diameter TBMs

• Review of technical and implementation challenges of using large-diameter TBMs in Iranian construction projects
• Geological and design challenges in urban and intercity projects
• Economic analysis and cost-benefit analysis of this technology
• Review of successful international experiences
•Design and production of drilling equipment
•  Providing localization and technology development solutions in Iran
The need to continue such events was emphasized at the end of the meeting. The enthusiastic reception of the meeting highlighted the importance and necessity of the topics raised and showed that international cooperation and exchange of experiences can be the key to overcoming the challenges in the tunneling and mechanized excavation industry.
Finally, the Iranian Tunnelling Association wishes to express its special gratitude to the Tehran and Suburbs Urban Railway Company (Tehran Metro) for its outstanding role in organizing this specialized meeting. It also sincerely appreciates other partner companies and sponsors whose cooperation and support made this event a success.
This meeting was an important step in expanding scientific and operational interactions in the country's tunneling industry. The Iranian Tunnelling Association invites all experts and enthusiasts to attend future meetings and events, especially the 15th Iranian Tunnel Conference, which will be held in Tehran in June 2025, and to contribute to the scientific and technical development of this industry with their active participation.

School of Geology of the University of Tehran and the Iranian Tunneling Association (IRTA) with the cooperation of Tehran Urban Planning and Research Center (TUPRC) organize:
"Scientific meeting: the role of urban underground spaces in sustainable development (Geological and Environmental issues)"
In this meeting, which has been endorsed by the International Tunnelling And Underground Space Association (ITA), international experts will speak on the topic of the meeting, emphasizing geological and environmental issues, and will answer the questions of the participants. Future4West, as the project is now called, aims to construct a mass transit system with four rail lines to Bath, Bristol Airport, Emersons Green and Cribbs Causeway, some of which would go underground.
