The  online event will be accessed through the ITA's digital platform which allow live debates, conferences, pre-recorded sessions, an exhibition hall and sponsoring.

These 5 days dedicated to the underground construction industry, will be the occasion to give an annual overview of the global tunnelling activity, present key figures, and future projects all over the world.

The whole week will be rhythmed with 10 technical sessions from ITA’s working groups and committees and more than 20 projects presentation.
You can also join the seventh episode of the ITACET lecture series on Tunnels refurbishment organised in collaboration with ITA WG6.

Commencement of the construction of the first section of the 10 metro line

The CEO of Metro Company said: the construction of the first section of Metro Line 10 will officially begin by the end of next week at a ceremony that will be attended by the Mayor of Tehran.

According to Mehr News Agency, Ali Emam, CEO of Metro Company, also added: “The construction of Tehran Metro Line 10, as one of the new lines of this network, is planned in 5 operational phases, the first section of which starts from “Persian Gulf Martyrs Lake Square” and ends at the “Book Square” will be 14.5 km long. The executive operation of this section starts with drilling the entrance shaft of the mechanized digging machine (TBM) from the station called Persian Gulf Martyrs Lake Square, and the next section will follow in due time.”

The CEO of Metro Company also mentioned: "The process of drilling and construction of tunnels on Line 10 will mainly be carried out with a full-face mechanized drilling machine.  Hence, it is expected that the construction of this section will at least take 4 years to be build if required financial resources are provided in time. The sequence and construction process of other parts of Line 10 have also been considered, and we hope that the executive operation of the second section of this line, which extends from the Persian Gulf Martyrs Lake Square to Wardavard, with approximately 6 km length, will begin shortly after the beginning of the first section."

It should be mentioned that Tehran Metro Line 10 is one of the 4 new lines of Tehran’s metro network, which was approved in February 2019 in the capital's comprehensive rail transportation plan, and will be implemented by Tehran Urban and Suburban Railway Company (Metro) by June 2021.

This line with a total length of 43 km with 35 stations, starts from the Kosar Aqueduct Area (North East of Tehran) and will connected to Wardavard station from Tehran metro line 5 (West of Tehran).

:: Prof Barla condolences ::
 | Post date: 2019/12/10 |

We heard the sad news that Prof. Giovanni Barla passed away on 17th of November.

Prof. Barla has been Professor of Rock Mechanics and an expert in the field of rock mass characterization and rock behavior, numerical modelling and back analysis, performance monitoring, slope stability, rock-structure interaction for underground workings and tunnels, Tunnelling in squeezing rock, and surface and underground mining.

As one of the most influential rock mechanics experts of our time he visited Iran on several occasions taking part in conferences and presenting key-note speeches, and consulting on various projects. His vast technical knowledge and his kind personal demeanor were trades that will never be forgotten by those who ever met him. We will keep fond memories from him.

On behalf of the Iranian Tunnelling Association we present our deepest condolences to his close family.

13th Iranian Tunnelling Conference

Olympic Hotel

November 19, 2019 – November 20, 2019

The construction of tunnels has found an important role in improving living standards and underground spaces have become an inseparable part of cities. Authorities of major cities have put utilizing subsurface spaces to solve traffic problems and provide better services to its citizens a priority. Current outlook on design and construction of road and urban tunnels, metro and railway tunnels, and water and service tunnels, all indicate an increasing dependency of the well-being of modern societies to underground structures.

Regardless of this positive outlook; the tunneling industry faces various challenges. However much progress has been made in recent decades and new horizons were opened. Using innovative construction methods and technologies, and utilizing new software for modelling and design, made it possible to face many of the challenges and to construct tunnels with various diameters even in difficult or mixed ground conditions.

The tunnelling industry must be able to provide for needs of the future. Better planning for making best use of subsurface spaces; gaining a better understanding of uncertainties and managing risk; increasing of safety during construction; making use of robotics for maintenance of TBM cutting tools; better understanding of soil conditioning for EPB machines; developing better tools to non-destructively image and evaluate ahead of excavation faces; and making use of past experiences to improve quality of performance whilst reducing unnecessary costs are just few items that could help developing new horizons for the tunneling industry.

This conference aims to provide an opportunity to share relevant knowledge and experience and discuss further development possibilities in tunnelling. The Iranian Tunnelling Association (IRTA) formally invites scientists, university professors, students, researchers, specialists, and professionals involved in tunnelling to participate in this event. Undeniably, an active attendance and participation of those involved in the tunnelling industry in this conference, will guarantee viability and promotion of underground space technologies. In addition to technical sessions and presentations, the conference will include a workshop, a trade exhibition, and technical visits which will surely offer lots of interesting information and also facilitate the establishment of new contacts.
