Introduction

Due to the increasing importance of tunnels and underground spaces it is required to profit from the latest technologies in the design and construction of these structures. The Iranian Tunnelling Association (IRTA) was established in 1998 in order to increase cooperation between professional bodies and universities and research institutes, and to coordinate and direct the activities toward the latest developments and standard practices. IRTA is a member of the International Tunnelling Association (ITA) since 1999. Some of the activities if IRTA include the activation of several working groups, holding national and international conferences, organizing monthly seminars and training courses, informing members of latest tunnelling developments in Iran and the world via the IRTA website, email communication, and various publications.
