Registration Remains Open for the ITA COSUF Workshop: Fire Safety in Road Tunnels, Emerging Risks and New Approaches
Registration is still open for the upcoming ITA COSUF Workshop: Fire Safety in Road Tunnels, Emerging Risks and New Approaches, which will take place on 9–10 September 2026 at the Centro Experimental San Pedro de Anes, Siero (Asturias), Spain. The workshop is hosted and co-organised by Applus.
This two-day technical workshop will bring together international experts and practitioners to discuss the latest developments in tunnel fire safety while providing participants with the opportunity to experience live demonstrations at one of Europe's leading experimental tunnel facilities.
Day 1 – Insights & Discussions
- Fire Fighting and Safety – Latest Trends and Developments
- Lithium-ion Battery Fires in Tunnels
- Refurbishment and Commissioning of Existing Tunnels
- Interactive Presentations and Round Table Discussions
Day 2 – Experience it Live

The workshop is open to both ITA COSUF members and non-members.

The GTS–IRTA Technical Forum officially begins its journey, bringing together expertise, experience, and innovation through a strategic collaboration between انجمن تونل ایران IRTA and the Greek Tunnelling Society, supported by SYSTRA Italy.
This forum is born out of a shared commitment to driving automation and digitalization, sharing innovative technical insights, and empowering the next generation of young tunnellers and engineers worldwide.
The GTS-IRTA Technical Forum will be led by Hanan Samadi (Chair of IRTAym) and Doris Skenderas (Vice Chair of Greek Tunnelling Society Young Members), whose vision and leadership will guide our upcoming programs, technical exchanges, and youth initiatives.

5th Symposium of Young Tunnelers of Asia (SYTA 2025) Successfully Concludes
The 5th Symposium of Young Tunnelers of Asia (SYTA 2025) was successfully held on 5 October 2025 in Tehran, Iran, hosted by the Iranian Tunneling Association (IRTA). This international event brought together young professionals, researchers, and industry experts from across the United States, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia, fostering knowledge exchange and collaboration in the tunneling and underground construction sector.
The symposium welcomed participants in person as well as online registrants, demonstrating the global interest and commitment of the young tunneling community. Attendees engaged actively in opening sessions, keynote speeches, and technical presentations sharing insights and experiences from their respective regions.
IRTA expresses its sincere gratitude to the IRTA Board, especially President Dr. Mohammad Khosrotash and Vice-President Dr. Jafar Hassanpour, for their guidance and support, which were instrumental in organizing the symposium at a high international standard.
Special appreciation is extended to ITA-AITES President Dr. Andrea Pigorini, Immediate Past President Dr. Arnold Dix, and Director of EMI, CSM, Dr. Jamal Rostami, whose valuable speeches and guidance inspired both seasoned professionals and the next generation of tunneling engineers. IRTA also acknowledges the contributions of colleagues from ITA Young Members (ITAym) worldwide, whose support and collaboration played a key role in the success of SYTA 2025. Announcing SYTA 2025 – Tehran, Iran
We are excited to announce the 5th Symposium of Young Tunnellers of Asia (SYTA 2025)!
It is a great honor for the Iranian Tunnelling Association- Young Members Committee (IRTAym) to host SYTA 2025 this October (5 Oct 2025) in Tehran, Iran, along with the 15th Iranian Tunnelling Conference.
This prestigious event will be held in a hybrid format—both in person and virtually—to ensure wider accessibility and participation worldwide. The symposium will feature abstracts, technical presentations, and collaborative discussions in the field of tunnelling and underground space technologies.
We warmly invite all professionals, researchers, and especially young members of the International Tunnelling Association (ITAym), to take part in this dynamic event—either by attending or contributing through presentations and abstract submissions. We would be happy to receive your presentation.
