The Santa Rosa and San Martin twin tunnels
Peru’s capital of Lima has opened 244m-long twin-tube tunnels crossing the Santa Rosa mountain.
The project connects the low-income San Juan de Lurigancho district, which is home to over one million people, with the Rimac district just north of downtown Lima. Each tube features two lanes, a bike path and a sidewalk.
Following the inauguration is a one-month testing phase for light cars and trucks weighing less than six tons. The test period will determine whether more signage is needed and if public transportation should be given access to the new roads.
Experts said the tunnels will allow Lima residents to move between the two districts separated by mountains in as little as five minutes, as opposed to the 50 minutes it would take during rush hour before the opening.
The project was delayed by two land slides since construction started in 2010.
