We heard the sad news that Prof. Giovanni Barla passed away on 17^th of November.

Prof. Barla has been Professor of Rock Mechanics and an expert in the field of rock mass characterization and rock behavior, numerical modelling and back analysis, performance monitoring, slope stability, rock-structure interaction for underground workings and tunnels, Tunnelling in squeezing rock, and surface and underground mining.

As one of the most influential rock mechanics experts of our time he visited Iran on several occasions taking part in conferences and presenting key-note speeches, and consulting on various projects. His vast technical knowledge and his kind personal demeanor were trades that will never be forgotten by those who ever met him. We will keep fond memories from him.
