South line might start rolling in August

The wait for south Bengalureans to board Namma Metro could be getting less with Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) aiming to open the South line in August.
While the Green Line operations on Reach 4 and 4A — connecting National College to Puttenahalli — might begin by late August, it will take a few more months before the entire metro network is opened. BMRCL is tunnelling between Chikpet and Majestic, vital to push trains from the North line towards the South line. Just about 65 metres of tunnelling is to be completed between the two stations before BMRCL can begin laying the track and start testing.
“Stations on these stretches are at an advanced stage of completion. We are expecting Kaveri to break through by June-end. Then, we will lay a track and push the train,” said Pradeep Singh Kharola, Managing Director, BMRCL.
Tunnel Boring Machines Krishna and Kaveri have been working on connecting Chikpet station to Kempe Gowda station. Godavari TBM, which was tunnelling between Sampige Road and Kempe Gowda station, broke through in April and tracks are being laid.
Vijayakumar, a resident of Basavanagudi, says, “We have been waiting for a long time for metro connectivity to Majestic. The stretch has been ready for more than a year. It would be great to see some trains too.”
TBM Krishna, headed towards Kempe Gowda station from Chikpet, is 185 meters away from breaking through, which is expected in August.
“We are targeting the November 1 date given to us (to commence operations). Tunnelling has been smooth. However, it is also the most unpredictable part of the process. Once completed, we can have more concrete timeframes,” Mr. Kharola said.
